ARTIFACT--Ming Bowl



Artifact No. 4242

Found by IOTA on August 16, 2000.
Location: North 6/West 22, in Southeast corner of Trench B/North.
Dated: Late sixteenth century.
Type: Blue and white porcelain from the Wanli period (1573-1619).
Measurements: Diameter 14.3cm; Height 7.2cm; Base diameter 6.2cm
Weight: 220grams.

Description: This bowl, a "Blue & White" is also known as "Kraak porcelain. It was made in China, most probably in Jingdezhen, the great ceramic center in Jiangxi Province. It has a foliate rim, decorated on the exterior with eight panels, each with a deer among foliage. The interior is similarly divided, but with each of the eight segment decorated with flowering plants. The central medallion is decorated with a deer.
