Monitoring the health of coral in the vicinity of the Santa Margarita excavation:
In keeping with Permit Condition #3 which states:
3. You shall implement a monitoring program during this project to assess the impacts of the salvage work on adjacent coral colonies.
IOTA has contracted with Micronesian Environmental Services to monitor and record the health of specific sample coral colonies in the vicinity of the Santa Margarita site.
The same sites are monitored each year in order to determine the long-term effect on coral communities from the Santa Margarita salvage, and to establish a basis of comparison for coral colonies in the immediate vicinity of excavation operations. In the interest of a genuine concern for the environment, IOTA voluntarily and at its own expense doubled the number of monitoring stations.
After six years of monitoring by an independent consultant it is clear that IOTA’s excavation of the Santa Margarita has done no damage to the surrounding coral.
